Spooky season is officially here. But while everyone else is watching horror movies or stocking up on plastic skeletons, those of us who bleed know the real jump scares happen in everyday life.
It’s waking up on crisp white sheets on your honeymoon, only to realize your period arrived overnight. It’s sitting in a restaurant in a brand-new white skirt when a friend whispers, “Um… you might want to tie your sweater around your waist.” Or it’s swimming in Bigfoot territory, frantically trying to wash out pink-stained shorts in an ice-cold river.
Periods happen. Blood happens. And while these surprise plot twists can feel terrifying in the moment, they aren’t as scary as we’ve been taught to think. In fact, when we swap these real stories out in the open, something pretty cool happens: the shame disappears, the horror turns into humour, and we realize we’re all in this together.
Here are a few real tales shared by folks in our joni #campbleed community that prove even the messiest leak care moments can turn into epic tales of survival (and unexpected acts of kindness).
1. The Vacation Plot Twists
Travel and periods go together like liquid and crisp white sheets—unpredictably and with maximum drama.
"Not sure it's my favourite story but we were on our honeymoon staying in the most cool domes in the middle of a desert. The sheets were crisp white. My period came in like a wrecking ball and I was mortified that I leaked through the night. My husband made me feel better but oh was I so happy to be checking out that day. Looked like a horror movie." — Melissa
"My period has never stopped me from travelling, but it has absolutely forced me into some ridiculous plot twists. A couple of years ago, I got it early while on a cruise ship, with no pads, no tampons, and apparently no maritime emergency supply of either.
After frantically checking the shop and guest services and coming up empty, I spent the night improvising with toilet paper and sheer determination. By the time we arrived in Sicily the next day, I wasn’t looking for ruins or pasta, I was looking for a pharmacy like my life depended on it." — Joelle
"We were on this remote island in the Philippines, and there were no good toilets to toss my sanitary napkin. So I just wrapped it up and shoved it in my shorts. We were out on a local boat, hopping from island to island, swimming, snorkeling, having a blast.
I totally forgot about the thing in my pocket until I noticed it had come loose and was floating around. I tried to grab it, but it broke apart and floated away. I just played it cool and acted like I didn’t care, but I was super embarrassed inside." — Maritess
2. The Mysterious Case of the Double Tampon (and Other Firsts)
Getting your first period—or navigating a new symptom on the go—often feels like being dropped into a suspense novel without a map.
"When I was 13 years old I awoke at 11am on a Saturday to heavy cramping and pain... I went to the bathroom to find myself covered in blood between my legs, all over my thighs almost to my knees. My sheets were also heavily bloodied and there was a smell that I had not known. That was a combination of metallic, earth and warmth. Strange to me..." — Danielle
"I was 10 years old when I got my first period. I vaguely knew what was happening, but it still surprised me, and it took me two days to work up the nerve to tell my mom. In fact, I remember tearing off a corner of a story book, scribbling 'I think I have the curse' on it, and sending my little brother downstairs to give it to her..." — Chloe
3. The Classroom Blackout & The Cryptozoology Encounter
Sometimes period drama escalates into full cinematic action.
"The nurse pulled out a pad... And then she pulled out the tampon. My eyes widened as she unwrapped the tampon, pulling out the bullet-shaped piece of cotton with a string hanging off the end...
All the blood drained out of my head. My face went white, the room started spinning... I saw stars, my head threw back, and my friend watched in horror as my eyes rolled into the back of my head and my whole body started shaking. This mini seizure lasted less than ten seconds before I lost consciousness and started sliding out of my seat..." — Amber
"I felt that familiar gush, and my face just paled... 'Bad,' my friend said. We knew there was a river in the forest... We walked as far upstream as we could to find a spot where I could wash up without anyone around...
My friend kept an eye out while I, now in my newly pink-stained shorts, managed to wash most of the blood out in the ice-cold river... As I was finishing up, we suddenly heard this bizarre sound coming from upstream—a loud, wet buzzing, like a bee crossed with an echoey yodeling yip.
We were in Bigfoot territory, so I half-joked that maybe the mythical creature had caught my scent..." — April
4. The Silent Sisterhood (and Unsung Allies)
If there’s a silver lining to the crimson crypt, it’s the way people show up for each other when things get messy.
"I got my first period in a white skirt. Of course I did. I was 12, at school, blissfully unaware that my body had decided to throw a surprise party without warning. One minute I was trading snacks at lunch, the next minute a friend was whispering, 'Um… you might want to tie your sweater around your waist.' That sweater became my first period survival tool.
Years later, I still consider a strategically placed sweater an underrated life skill... Living with your period also means becoming resourceful... You master the art of quietly asking another woman, 'Do you happen to have… you know?' And almost always, she does. That’s one of the things I’ve always loved about it—the silent sisterhood." — Sherri
"A woman in the restaurant decided to loudly point it out to her friends and say 'I hope they clean her chair afterwards.' A man at the next table who I did not know silently stood up, smiled and stood behind me and said 'Which direction are you going?' I was so confused then he said 'I have sisters, a wife and a young daughter and a son, I would want someone to do this for them in this situation and I want my son to know what it’s like to be a real man.'
He walked behind me until I got to the bathroom... He nonchalantly removed the chair and had staff bring a new one without drawing lots of attention... taking all of the blame... Then when we were wrapping up lunch we found out the man paid for our entire lunch. What started out as a mortifying nightmare experience easily turned it into one of the sweetest memories." — Emily
Breaking the Curse: Why Your Story Matters
There is a strange quiet grief in feeling ashamed of a body doing exactly what it was made to do. A stained sheet, a makeshift pad, a sudden start—these aren't failures. They are human moments.
For too long, we’ve been taught to treat our periods like a secret to be kept, a mess to be hidden, or a curse to be endured. But every time someone speaks up, shares a story, or laughs through a mortifying memory, the shadow grows a little smaller.
Period care should support us with dignity, wherever life takes us. Because taking period equity seriously means more than just access—it means reclaiming our comfort, our confidence, and our right to bleed without shame.
At joni, we believe access to period care is a fundamental right, and that period equity begins when the shame ends. When we change the narrative around our bodies, we don't just rewrite our own stories—we change what comes next for everyone who bleeds. (That's the reason for our one-of-a-kind coffee table book about periods: BLEED.)
