💡 Quick Answer: What is the "Sweet Spot" in Period Care?

The sweet spot is where sustainability and performance meet. Supporting menstrual health means creating products that actively manage your body's delicate environment—keeping you dry, comfortable, and protected without compromising your values. At joni, that means combining premium organic materials with thoughtfully engineered components that work together to support both people and the planet.

You switched to organic period care because you wanted something gentler—for your body and for the planet.

So why do some "natural" products still leave people feeling damp, irritated, or uncomfortable?

At joni, we think the answer lies in something the wellness industry doesn't talk about enough: performance matters.

A period product isn't just a material—it's a system. And supporting menstrual health means finding the delicate balance between sustainability, comfort, and clinical performance.

As part of our commitment to radical transparency, we sat down with our co-founder and chief innovator, Jayesh Vekariya, whose background in pharmacology shapes how we think about period care. His perspective is simple: products should work with your body's natural environment, not against it.

That means asking a difficult question:

What if the most sustainable solution isn't always the best for our health?

Finding the Sweet Spot

In pharmacology, there's a concept called a therapeutic window—the point where something delivers maximum benefit with minimal unintended effects.

Jayesh applies this same principle to period care.

"For a pad to support menstrual health, it needs to absorb fluid efficiently enough to keep skin dry, while still allowing airflow and maintaining comfort. Too little absorbency can leave moisture sitting against the skin. Too much heat and too little breathability can create an environment that contributes to irritation and discomfort."

Finding that sweet spot means acknowledging a truth that often gets lost in marketing:

Natural materials alone don't always deliver the level of performance needed to support comfort and menstrual health.

Sometimes, supporting your body requires looking beyond labels and focusing on how a product actually performs.

Why Performance Matters to Your Body

Your vulva and vagina maintain a highly sensitive ecosystem influenced by factors like moisture, friction, and heat. When you wear a period product, you're introducing a physical barrier into that environment for hours at a time.

According to Jayesh, "When a product doesn't provide enough breathability or effectively manage moisture, heat can build up and create conditions that encourage bacterial growth and increase the likelihood of irritation."

Products that trap heat and moisture can contribute to discomfort, rashes, and skin irritation over time, he explains.

This is why we don't think of period care as simply absorbing blood. We think about creating an environment where your skin can feel comfortable throughout your cycle.

While a 100% cotton pad may sound like the cleanest option, natural fibres alone don't always move moisture away from the skin effectively. Without thoughtful engineering, fluid can remain closer to the body, leading to lingering dampness, friction, and discomfort for some users.

Radical Transparency: Why We Engineer for Performance

At joni, one of our core values is radical transparency. That means telling the whole story—even when it's more complicated than a marketing headline.

We'd love to say every component of every product is perfectly natural and compostable. The truth is more nuanced than that.

Building period care that supports both people and the planet sometimes means making thoughtful trade-offs and choosing materials for the specific job they need to do.

All joni pads and tampons are independently tested and certified by OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, meaning every finished product has been tested for over 1,000 potentially harmful substances—not just individual components.

But we also intentionally use highly engineered materials when they improve comfort and performance.

Because we don't choose materials because they're trendy.

We choose them because of the job they need to do.

Why Our Tampons Are 100% Plastic-Free

One of the questions we get asked most often is:

"If your pads use some synthetic materials, why are your tampons completely plastic-free?"

The answer is simple: they're entirely different products with entirely different performance requirements.

Tampons are insertable products and are designed to work inside the body. Because of this, absorbency needs to be carefully balanced. An overly absorbent tampon can dry out vaginal tissue and increase the risk of complications like Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

That's why our tampons are intentionally simple.

They're made with 100% organic cotton and have no plastic applicator. We don't use Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) or other high-absorbency materials because they simply aren't needed to create a high-performing tampon.

Sometimes the best design is also the simplest.

Why We Use SAP (Super Absorbent Polymers) in Our Pads

Pads are different.

Because they sit outside the body, they rely on a sophisticated multi-layered system to manage fluid, airflow, and comfort.

Our pads utilize a breathable plant-based biofilm backsheet that is certified for both home and industrial composting. But inside the absorbent core, we use SAP—and our SAP is not compostable.

We know that might surprise you.

We also believe you deserve to know exactly why it's there.

SAP, or Super Absorbent Polymer, locks moisture away into a stable gel so it doesn't move back toward your skin when you sit, walk, or go about your day. This helps keep the surface of the pad drier and contributes to overall comfort.

At joni, we use Sumitomo SAP, a high-performing material trusted across multiple industries for its moisture-management capabilities.

Yes, it's a petroleum-derived material, chosen intentionally because it remains one of the most effective ways to deliver the performance and comfort we believe people deserve from their period care.

Radical Transparency Means Talking About Plastic Honestly

Coming from an organic and sustainable brand, that statement might feel unexpected.

But true transparency means moving beyond fear-based marketing and embracing nuance.

Not all plastics are created equal, and not every synthetic material is inherently harmful. In some cases, highly engineered materials can play an important role in delivering the performance needed to support comfort and skin health.

What matters most is not whether a product is “natural” or “synthetic,” but how it performs against the body’s microenvironment over time. When heat and moisture are not effectively managed, it can contribute to discomfort, irritation, and skin sensitivity for some people. This is why we focus so heavily on breathability, moisture control, and overall system design—not just individual materials.

By pairing highly absorbent SAP with a breathable plant-based backsheet that allows heat to escape, we create a product designed to help keep you drier and more comfortable throughout your cycle.

It's one of the reasons many people tell us they experience less irritation after switching to joni.

Premium Care Shouldn't Be a Luxury

We think deeply about every material we use. Every component is selected for a specific purpose—to deliver high performance while minimizing our environmental impact wherever possible.

But we also believe that taking care of your health shouldn't come with a premium price tag.

That's why we intentionally price joni as affordably as we can, because everyone deserves access to period care that is thoughtfully designed for both their bodies and the planet.

It's not about chasing an impossible ideal or stripping products down to the fewest ingredients possible. It's about finding the smart, science-backed sweet spot—one that supports your health, respects the planet, and embraces the complexity that real innovation often requires.

Because radical transparency means admitting that sometimes the most sustainable solution isn't the simplest one—it's the one that best supports both people and the planet.

Your Questions About joni's Organic Period Pads Answered:

Are joni pads plastic-free?

Not entirely. Our pads use a small amount of Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) in the absorbent core because it is one of the most effective materials for locking moisture away from the skin and improving comfort. We believe in being transparent about every material we use and why we use it.

Are joni tampons plastic-free?

Yes. Our tampons are made from 100% organic cotton and contain no plastic applicator, SAP, or synthetic absorbent materials.

Why doesn't joni make completely plastic-free pads?

Because, today, removing SAP would require compromising your menstrual health. There is no suitable substitute at this time. Using SAP allows us to create period pads that effectively trap moisture that could otherwise contribute to irritation or infection.  Plus, we use Sumitomo SAP, which is the gold standard when it comes to super absorbent polymers. It was originally invented for the agriculture industry for soil moisture retention and it's still used for that purpose today.

Is SAP safe in menstrual pads?

SAP has been used for decades in products that require moisture management, including menstrual and personal care products. In pads, it helps keep moisture away from the skin by turning liquid into a stable gel.

Are joni products tested for harmful substances?

Yes. Every finished joni pad and tampon is independently tested and certified by OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, which screens for over 1,000 potentially harmful substances.

Why do some period products cause irritation?

Irritation can happen for many reasons, including trapped moisture, friction, heat, sensitivities to certain materials, or individual skin differences. A breathable product that effectively manages moisture may help reduce discomfort for some people.

What does "radical transparency" mean at joni?

Radical transparency means telling the whole story—even when it's complicated. We believe you deserve to know what materials are in your products, why we chose them, and the trade-offs involved in creating period care that's designed for both people and the planet.
