Can You Wax on Your Period?

We’re often asked, can you wax on your period? The answer: yes, you can! This is a good thing because periods have a way of sneaking up on you. Even if you plan your wax around your menstrual cycle to avoid it, there’s no guarantee! Fortunately, it’s totally normal to wax your pelvic area during your period. Here’s how to prepare and what to expect.

Why Wax?

To wax or not to wax, that is the question. The answer? It’s your decision! This blog post is not an endorsement of the wax life. Some people like to wax, some people don’t like to wax. Some are wax curious, some are anti-wax. At joni, we’re all for bodily agency. It’s your body and you get to choose what’s right for you.

Waxing on Your Period

To answer our questions about waxing on your period, we asked our friends at Fuzz Wax Bar. These are their hot tips:

  • Use tampons (tuck in the string) or a menstrual cup or disc to keep blood out of your waxing experience.

  • Change your period care right before your appointment to avoid spillage.

  • Shower before your appointment but if you’re going to your appointment straight from work, for example, no worries. Most waxing places have cleansing wipes.

  • Keep a supply of period care in your bag just in case. Fuzz Wax Bar carries joni products for those who unexpectedly get their period.

  • Your period is your business. You don’t need to tell your esthetician or skin care specialist but you’re also welcome to.

  • Any other concerns? Don’t hesitate to reach out to your wax bar in advance. There’s no question they haven’t heard!

Is Waxing on Your Period More Painful than Normal?

Do you want the good news or the bad news? The bad news is that yes, waxing while menstruating is more painful. The good news is that it’s still manageable. If you are comfortable doing so, let your wax therapist know you’re menstruating so they can be extra gentle. You could also take ibuprofen in advance of your appointment, which you may already be using for period pain. Fuzz Wax Bar also recommends using their Sensitiva CBD Oil 30 minutes before.

Waxing After Care

After your waxing experience, Fuzz Wax Bar recommends changing into a fresh pair of cotton underwear for its softness and breathability and wearing loose clothing for a couple of days. And avoid scented products around the area for at least a day, since they may cause irritation, especially if you’re menstruating.

joni pads and tampons are ideal since they are organic, unscented, and free from nasty chemicals. If you’re a pad user, you’ll definitely love how super soft joni’s bamboo pads and liners are. Since the protective layer is made from cornstarch and not petroleum-based plastic (like conventional pads), they’re also breathable.

In fact, even if you’re not menstruating, joni’s bamboo liners can provide a soft layer of protection for sensitive skin. Remember to change pads and liners every three to four hours—or more often—to keep your vulva dry and comfortable, and to avoid rashes, bacteria, and infections.

The Choice is Yours

So, if you choose to wax, your period does not have to hold you back. Because guess what? Periods are normal. If you have any questions whatsoever about waxing and your period or waxing in general, don’t hesitate to reach out to a reputable wax bar in advance (like Fuzz Wax Bar). This is what they do and this is your body. No question is too taboo! Promise.
