Shania Lane is a full spectrum birth worker currently residing on the land of the sngaytskstx tum-xula7xw (Sinixt) Peoples. She is passionate about low barrier, inclusive birth work, and is currently leading one of few no-cost birth doula programs in Canada alongside Apple Tree Maternity.
“There was a long period before I found my calling as a doula, where I would constantly take it upon myself to help others who did not ask for my help. Acknowledging consent within lending energy has changed the way I serve all people in my life.
There is a life before parenthood, much like there is a life before becoming a doula. And just like we believe our experiences shape how we parent, it is much the same for doula’s and how we serve. Being able to share my journey into this work with others, is just another way for us to connect more authentically.
With each birth and family I have the pleasure of supporting, I grow a deeper understanding of myself as a helper, as well as the collective power of humankind. It is a great privilege to have curiosity and compassion be at the centre of both my work and my life.
My mother always said that people weren’t sure how I was born so wise and nurturing. She would drop me off for playdates, and the mother’s would tell her upon my retrieval, that I didn’t play with the kids; just sat and chatted with the moms, helping around the kitchen. I was always trying to lighten the load for the women around me. I’ve always done my best work for, and amongst women.
As I grew older, I became wildly fascinated with the reproductive system and the magic it possesses. While all the kids around me were covering their ears, doodling, or growing embarrassed in health class, I was smiling ear to ear learning the ins and outs of menstruation and pregnancy.”
